Tube cooler: The cooling chameleon

March 16, 2026

In recent years, Hydroniq Coolers’ proprietary Tube cooler has experienced a bit of a renaissance, increasingly being chosen as cooling remedy for both maritime and land-based industrial applications. Continue reading to find out why.

Firstly, Hydroniq Coolers has delivered tube coolers since the early 1970s. Today, the company offers more than 200 standard models of shell and tube heat exchangers with cooling surfaces from 0.2 to 200 square metres and diameters between 102 and 711 mm.

This broad product range underlines one of the key benefits of the Tube cooler: It is fully customizable, thereby enabling a perfect fit for any type of project.

For example, for marine and offshore pumping system supplier Framo’s deliveries to medium range tankers, Hydroniq Coolers has developed a new range of tube coolers that are smaller in diameter and more compact than before. These fit better with the requirements of Framo, who is constantly looking to make pump skids even more compact as less weight equals lower costs and emissions.

Hydroniq has specialized its production of heat exchangers to enable customized solutions based on standard heat exchanger models. The company has advanced computer programs for effectively and accurately calculating the thermal performance of its heat exchangers.

Hydroniq Coolers’ ability to customize products to a customers' very specific requirements is further underlined by the wide range of materials that the Tube Cooler can be delivered in. Hydroniq has a wealth of experience in working with special material types, such as stainless steel, titanium, carbon steel, Alu.brass, Cu/Ni 90/10 or Cu/Ni 70/30. The company’s highly qualified technical personnel can advise on appropriate materials for even the most demanding operating conditions.

The company delivers a proven cooling solution that is manufactured to allow thermal expansion without causing leaks or other damages. The latter is of particular importance as detection of leaks and weaknesses can prevent catastrophic failures that could cause injuries, environmental harm, or loss of life. This is critical in high-pressure systems such as marine cooling systems, and industrial vessels. Hydroniq’s Tube cooler is designed for pressures ranging from 10 to 60 bar depending on size. All of the company’s heat exchangers are therefore hydrostatically pressure-tested and supplied with a pressure test certificate.

The Tube cooler is perhaps best known for its maritime use, but it is also increasingly being applied to land-based process industries. For example, Europe’s largest aluminium plant, Hydro Sunndal, has ordered specially adapted tube coolers from Hydroniq Coolers to cool the oil that is used to lower the temperature of the rectifiers at a prebake plant. This project also demonstrates that the Tube cooler can be utilised to cool a number of liquids,in addition to water and seawater.

In summary, the Tube cooler can be tailor made to tackle high pressure and special design requirements. Moreover, it can be retrofitted to replace other cooling brands. Even though Hydroniq Coolers customized many products, delivery times are very short for the Tube cooler.
